Spesihle was born with a cleft lip and palate as well as a facial cleft. He had surgery right after he was born to fix part of his facial cleft. While his family was told he would need follow up surgeries they were not able to access care for years.
In April, 2012 Operation Smile received an email from Spesihle’s neighbour, who had read about the organisation in a magazine. He was hopeful that Operation Smile might be able to help Spesihle whose family was so impoverished. Spesihle did not suffer any learning disabilities, but had been bullied because of his appearance so much so that his mother no longer forced him to go to school. Dr Madaree and his team were able to provide surgery for Spesihle’s cleft lip and palate and have been monitoring his progress to evaluate for this third reconstructive surgery to reconstruct his eyelid and address continual seeping and discharge from his enucleated eye.
